The death toll continues to rise after the deadliest tropical storm to hit the Philippines that its Pacific Islanders have seen in more than four-decades.
“Right now the challenge is to find out how many people have actually died and how many people we have to take care of,” said a spokesman for the Philippines National Red Cross.
At last report, almost 150 bodies have been found…all dead at the hands of Mother Nature’s ferocious “Storm Ketsana.”
“We’re really talking about maybe hundreds of thousands of people,” with about 280,000 to 300,000 displaced in the island of Luzon alone, said a Philippines Red Cross spokesperson.
Ketana’s fury left more than 80-percent of Manila under flood waters, forcing the evacuation of almost 50-thousand residents.
Weather experts recorded the waters dumped onto the island’s capital surpassed the amount of flooding that slammed onto the city of New Orleans, back in August of 2005.
And though countless Hurricane Katrina victims were forced to survive for up to 18-days after facing Katrina’s fury, they were also forced to fight her aftermath (including scorching heat, hazardous waters, man-eating wildlife, and starvation). These inhumane conditions left New Orleans’ displaced residents with no choice but to fight to stay alive.
EIGHTEEN DAYS versus THREE DAYS. I’d say the 15-day difference would seem like a lifetime in an unforeseen predicament such as these.
The US government has already extended a helping hand to the Philippines, just a FEW DAYS after Ketsana slammed onto the island. American helicopters are on site to assist in relief operations, and are even handing out rations of food to survivors of the storm.
I guess Kayne West was right when he said, “George Bush doesn’t like black people.” Just check out how fast America stepped up to the plate to rush to the aid of others in despair. But when it comes to our very own people, America’s track record has been that of sheer procrastination. This leads me to wonder if the America’s rich and powerful care about the lives of their poor fellow citizens.
Not one person in power stood up to defend Katrina’s victims. This while the Bush Administration appointed invalids (like Powell) to head FEMA. Know why? Because more than 13-thousand deaths over a span of 18-days landed the administration a budget of $400-million. With that said, many could argue that those funds went straight into the pockets of America’s elite…NOT KATRINA’S VICTIMS (who were mostly poor Americans).
Katrina’s aftermath mimicked the richest country in the world as a third-world nation. But on August 29, 2005, all Bush and Cheney seemed to have concern with was WAR – not the blue-collar people of our nation who were suffering on the so-called “Land of Opportunity.” But opportunity for who? The rich seem to only get richer, as the poor become poorer. War generates money. Therefore, the establishment focused their primary efforts on techniques (like water-boarding) to torture war prisoners in Abu Ghraib. – not New Orleans residents drowning on the “Land of the Free.” And according to our government, our wars are being fought all in the name of Christianity. But, they don’t send their kids to fight for America’s freedom, they send yours to shed the blood of your offspring for the Almighty dollar. For, when it came to help the poor Americans who needed to be rescued from Katrina’s aftermath, no one seemed to care… Did they?

I was in the 1994 big earthquake in the SF Valley of
California. That earthquake affected mostly white, and/or affluent people. We had FEMA out immediately. We had water and shelter immediately. We had guys coming out with papers to sign and checks to hand out. I saw how organized and efficient they were when my home got completely demolished and to me there is no explanation for why Katrina was handled differently other than the fact Bush was president at the time. That and Haliburton had something to do with security there. But within five days I had my home declared condemned and a check to relocate and a section 8 voucher in my hand when that earthquake hit. Anyone who knows Sherman Oaks and Northridge (which were the hardest hit) knows these are predominantly white neighborhoods also.
