This past Saturday radio station WJLB 98FM used the Northland Mall to host a Coats for Kids drive event but fights and gunfire shut down the fundraiser forcing rappers Bow Wow and Diggy Simmons to cancel their performance.

In the months following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, a charity run by hip-hop star Wyclef Jean spent a pittance of the money it took in on disaster relief and doled out millions in questionable contracts.

Yele Haiti’s raked in over $16 million in 2010, the most the charity had ever received. But less than a third of that went to emergency efforts, and $1 million was paid to a Florida firm that doesn’t seem to exist.

Jean’s charity, which he founded in 2005 with his cousin Jerry Duplessis, was already troubled when the earthquake struck Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010. The NY Post reported in 2008 that it had never filed a required tax form detailing its spending with the IRS. Continue Reading…

Braylon Edwards is sending 100 Cleveland high school students to college on his dime. This, even while he is currently unemployed.

In 2007, Edwards promised 100 Cleveland high school students that he would pay for their college tuition—a total value of $1 million—if they maintained grade point averages at 2.5 or higher and performed 15 hours of community service. The students lived up to their end of the bargain, and Edwards is a man of his word.

Women Empowering Women

Kids in one Columbia, South Carolina neighborhood now have a greater chance at landing themselves a higher education — and they all have Prince to thank for that!

The purple bandit may not be paying a slew of concert promoters, but he is forking out $250,000 to the non-profit group Eau Claire Promise Zone — an organization which has a mission of “building an enduring pipeline to success for all children in the Promise Zone through community leadership, partnerships, coordination and action.”

Here’s ECPZ’s statement in response to Prince’s generosity:

“PRINCE and the New Power Generation donate $250,000 to the efforts of enriching lives and empowering futures!”

The Eau Claire Promise Zone is a 12-neighborhood area that is part of the nationwide “Promise Neighborhoods” movement, modeled after the work of Geoffrey Canada and his Harlem Children’s Zone.

A “Dedicated Reader” of HSK recently left a commented on an article titled Remember When America Had Money?. This reader is passionate about the subject because she is someone currently struggling beyond most of our comprehension.

This reader is also a college educated single mother of 3 children who has a track record of long-time employment in corporate HR positions. She was FAST TRACK MANAGEMENT!!!! before the company was forced to close at the PEAK of the financial meltdown in 2009

After speaking with the woman about her current situation and how Jacky could help, she was very reluctant to accept anything with-out the promise of giving it back once she was on her feet. Jacky told her he would have none of that and suggested that she should pay-it-forward to another person in need. If this trend succeeded it would be a monumental achievement for society.
