On This Day In 1962, James Brown Records Live At The Apollo

at his own expense!

There is a lesson to be learned from the legendary James Brown.

James Brown began his professional career at a time when rock and roll was opening new opportunities for black artists to connect with white audiences. But the path he took to fame did not pass through Top 40 radio or through The Ed Sullivan Show and American Bandstand. James Brown would make his appearance in all of those places eventually, but only after a decade spent performing almost exclusively before black audiences and earning his reputation as the Hardest Working Man in Show Business. On this day in 1962, he took a major step toward his eventual crossover and conquest of the mainstream with an electrifying performance on black America’s most famous stage—a performance recorded and later released as Live at the Apollo (1963), the first breakthrough album of James Brown’s career.

By the time 1962 rolled around, James Brown was one of the most popular figures on the R&B scene, not so much on the strength of his recordings, but on the strength of his live act. As he would throughout his long career, Brown ran his band, the Famous Flames, like a military unit, demanding of his instrumentalists and backing vocalists the same perfection he demanded of himself. Even in the middle of a performance, Brown would turn around and dish out fines for missed or flubbed notes, all without missing or flubbing a dance step himself. At the midnight show at the Apollo on October 24, 1962, however, every member of Brown’s band knew that the fines they faced would be far greater than normal. “You made a mistake that night,” band member Bobby Byrd told Rolling Stone magazine, “the fine would move from five or ten dollars to fifty or a hundred dollars.” Continue Reading…

New Edition Reunite 2011
Bobby Brown told Hustler magazine that he’s back with New Edition and they also have a reality show, album and tour in the works.

Here’s what Bobby Brown had to say:

“We have a conference call every Sunday. We’re putting it back together. I think the thing that was missing with us was prayer – us being able to pray together and understand our differences. I think that’s what made us fight so much. Our friendship was lost once the business of being in the band exploded.

We’re now working at becoming friends again and getting back together next year for a tour and an album.
And maybe a television show.”

Here’s what a close friend of Johnny Gill had to say: Continue Reading…

Redd Foxx Had A Thing For Hermaphrodites

Redd Foxx Secret Sex Parties

While doing a little digging on the internet today, on I found this shocking article on Redd Foxx’s secret sex parties. (I remember Redd Foxx from the antenna television show “Sanford And Son” and some of you may recognize him from the 1989 movie “Harlem Nights”) It was written by an unknown inside source who’s father who was a friend of the late black comedian.

Here’s what the source says about Red Foxx’s deviant side:

I have a several very sexually explicit and very NASTY I could tell about Redd Foxx courtesy of my late Father. SOME of them border on sexual battery, some border on rape–honestly…..Redd was a NASTY, and viscous man, who had a nasty and dark side. He had a good heart, but still rape, sexual batters…NO WAY…However, this is tea, the cleanest story I could tell…Like I say, some of the stuff bordered on rape, and I don’t want to discuss that.

This all allegedly took place back in the 1970′s – a time when swinging was hip, and HIV was unknown. The truth is that was a long time ago, and Redd has now been dead for many years, but the author caught my attention after I read that Redd had a relationship with a hermaphrodite named Sir Lady Java (whom I’m told is still alive to this day). With this story now coming to surface, it proves that even when you’re dead your skeletons will inevitably come out to be exposed.

Don’t you agree?

2010 Heads Of State (Bobby Brown & Friends)

Monday, October 25th, 2010
Send this Story to a Friend

Last night, my date and I headed over to Universal Citywalk to have some shrimp at “Bubba Shrimp’s” and since we had nothing to do after dinner, we decided to head to Gibson Amphitheatre to catch a show…

The show began at 8:15 p.m. and we got there just in time to see After 7 perform their last two songs.  The old women over 40 loved when the group ended their set with their 90′s hit “Ready Or Not.”  After 7 didn’t have a band — their music was pre-recorded. I believe the group should start performing on cruise ships.

About 15-minutes later Teddy Riley, Aaron Hall and Damon Hall hit the stage. I was surprised.  Know why? Because they were fucking good mane.  I loved it most when Aaron Hall dissed Trey Songs and Chris Brown.  Aaron said they’re good because they’re using his style, but asked if these newbies could hold up another 20-years and look like him? Ouch!!!! Continue Reading…

The Long Island Music Hall Of Fame is set to induct Eric B & Rakim, November 16th. The legendary rap group will be joining the ranks of past inductees like Public Enemy, Billy Joel, Joan Jett, Alec Baldwin, LL Cool J, Paul Scaeffer and Grandmaster Flash.

In light of the great news, I reached out to hip hop rap mogul Russell Simmons to ask him his thoughts on the matter. Simmons said:

“Eric B is one of the coolest guys…everybody wanted to be like Eric…. him and Flash were the coolest DJ’s ever. As for Rakim he changed the way how people rap they all rhyme like Rakim today he represented the Gods. I’ll like to congratulate Eric & Rakim on being inducted.”
