   Jacky,

   I had previously commented on stuff ’bout Drake which inevitably led to your ‘take’ on the record industry, I think you had also quoted Clive Davis: “The Record Industry is dying,” or something of the sort! Never the less, I just came across this first on Bloomberg then on the FT site; I had to do away with some of the extraneous stuff, I’ll include to link to the FT site:

   Although consumers continue to purchase large amounts of digital music, they are buying individual tracks rather than higher-margin albums.

   Apple is working with EMI, Sony Music, Warner Music and Universal Music Group, on a project the company has codenamed “Cocktail”, according to four people familiar with the situation.

   The labels and Apple are working towards a September launch date for the project, which aims to boost interest in albums by bundling liner notes and video clips with the music.

   “It’s all about re-creating the heyday of the album when you would sit around with your friends looking at the artwork, while you listened to the music,” said one executive familiar with the plans.

   Apple wants to make bigger purchases more compelling by creating a new type of interactive album material, including photos, lyric sheets and liner notes that allow users to click through to items that they find most interesting. Consumers would be able to play songs directly from the interactive book without clicking back into Apple’s iTunes software, executives said.

   “It’s not just a bunch of PDFs,” said one executive. “There’s real engagement with the ancillary stuff.”

   The music companies declined to comment.

   Album sales in the US fell 14 per cent in 2008 to 428.4m units, according to Nielsen SoundScan, which tracks retail sales data. <<<——–

   most people dont even know that it was a CB song…. People are not paying attention to music all that much these days. They are Hyped out and self indulged these days. Its a challenge to musicians to actually make art people want to consume!

   Well, not that it was KNOWN that it WAS or WASN’T a CB song; but for the fact that it’s way up high on itunes and Amazon and didn’t even show on Billboard, that’s what I’d really like to know.

   As far as the Cocktail ‘strategy’, do you think it’d make ‘em look at the actual music, the actual songwriting and such? At one time there was a thing called “album art”, no?

   I almost forgot, Chrisette Michele gave props to CB, essentially saying that the apology was unnecessary and that whatever Rhi and Breezy had was/is private; guess what? I like that! I liked it so much I went and got her Cd from Amazon!

   good point about the ratio between “single” purchases and actual full album buys… a great example was Katy Perry last summer – can’t remember the exact figures but it was overwhelming.

   with that said, let’s congratulate my boys Kings Of Leon who have recently gone platinum for the ALBUM they wrote, not a single that got overhyped. real artists, no matter what genre they fall into are making a comeback. with the market saturated to a point of no return, who else but REAL musicians will be able to wether the storm of bullshit that has led to the soon demise of the current music industry format?
