Coolio – Chump then and Chump Now!
Coolio and I have done some work together in the past. It was Coolio, Domino, myself, and Coolio’s homeboy Billy-Boy.
We were recording a track called, “Connect Tha Dot” it was for my first album Narcissism.
The year was 1996 and these cats were older than Jacky. Back then I went by a different name. I went under the moniker H-Bomb.
Back then it was not the norm for rappers who spoke about the streets to be running around with white chic’s but I did. I had a platinum blonde. I don’t know about the other guys but my hustle was real. We didn’t just ride around Hollywood. Me and my white bitch was deep in the hood of South Central.
Let’s get the picture straight. This chic was not some raggedy bitch. She was one of the best that the Caucasian race has to offer. The black kids were proud of me, within me they saw their future. It was her who introduced me to DJ Sweet Mike. He was Domino’s DJ. Mike introduced me to Domino and the Rollin 30’s (CRIPS.) We were in business that’s a whole other story.
Coolio wasn’t big yet so when we recorded things were mad cool it was all gravy. Problem was when I recorded the Coolio verse it was him Billy-Boy and I. Domino had done his verse at a separate studio session. It was the only way I could catch up to him (we were all fuckin busy i swear.)
So the song was finally completed, only few more songs left to do to finish the album. I lived on Detroit ave by Sunset. Donald Faison was my neighbor. Terry was always there (Terrance Howard ) the route was Hollywood to the SC (south central), back to Sana Monica and Vine to record at Paramount studios, then to Westwood to Basil’s office, he was my lawyer.
Narcissism was completed. The album is done, time to turn in DATS and release forms.
Fuck I forgot to get Coolio’s signature on the release form! So I get hold of him it was at Echo Studios. I am with my nigga’s from Jersey. We play the record. Coolio is with his nigga’s. He hears Domino’s verse and he says he don’t like his verse he wanna do his verse over.
He knows I have a deal too, so he says, “he needs 30k to sign off.” Gangsta’s Paradise is over the radio he has a hit record and he knows I know it. I am high and I am not hearing him. I’ll let Basil handle this shit. I am going in studio A to hang-out with Kool Keith and Pimp’in Rex. The Pharcyde was recording in studio B.
I wasn’t trippin. I knew my lawyer would close the deal.
Short time later the deal was done. I never saw Coolio again. I didn’t want to. I had no reason to, he tried to go into my pockets.
I wasn’t mad at him it’s a part of the climb up the Ladder of $ucce$$

That was a fine album Jacky. Life was a whole other proposition back then, no computers no phones. Less technology in total. But the sound wasn’t less. I listen to that album as a standout piece within the decade.
