Legendary Jazz Singer Lena Horne Laid To Rest…
Thousands of mourners bid their final farewells to one of Hollywood’s first black leading ladies who broke through decades of racial boundaries, Friday.
Legendary jazz singer and actress Lena Horne was laid to rest in New York City after passing away at the age of 92, Sunday.
Among the massive group paying their respects were Horne’s granddaughter, actress Jenny Lumet, former Mayor David Dinkins and singer Chita Rivera.
Horne “was so many ideas existing all at the same time in the same space and they were all conflicting and they were all true,” Lumet said.“I’ve tried to sum her up and I can’t sum her up; summing up really means it’s over and I think that she’s not over and that she’s quite infinite.”
With that stated, I think that there were many black female artists who were missing from Horne’s funeral. Know why? Because without Lena there would be no Diana Ross, Halle Berry, or Jennifer Hudson, and the like. So, where were Beyonce or Alica Keys? I guess they were all too busy to say goodbye to a strong black woman who paved the show business way for them. But, I do have total respect for Vanessa Williams. Know why? Because she made it a point to be at Lena’s funeral. Nonetheless, It seems like black entertainers get amnesia once they become successful, because if they knew and honored their history they all would have been at Lena Horne’s funeral. Don’t you agree?
