A crowd of more than 200 people watched as a 20-year-old divorced Somalian woman, accused of committing adultery, was stoned to death by Islamists, Tuesday.

The woman was charged, by militant group al-Shabab, with having an affair with an unmarried 29-year-old man…he was given 100 lashes.

The woman’s stoning reportedly took place as she was taken to public grounds, and buried up to her waist. Her boyfriend is reported to have received his punishment at the same venue.

Under al-Shabab’s law, any person who has been married is liable to be found guilty of adultery, punishable by stoning to death (regardless of if that person is a divorcee). And, any persons who have sex before marriage, could be subjected to 100 lashes.

This is said to be the second stoning in Somalia this year. Somalia is reported to not have a functioning national government for almost two decades.

I say Somalia’s laws are absurd. She faces death, while he gets lashes. What is this a one sided coin? Why do men (who make the law) not face the same punishment? I find it all barbaric. It’s about time women around the world be given equal rights.
