RAKIM: THE KING OF HIPHOP…. ON THE ROCKS!!!

Rakim - Crack Addict

Rakim is said to be known as one of the greatest rappers of all time. Who’s to blame for such a heavy statement? You are, or at least those of you who support such self-proclaimed idols. Because of that, you’ve all let it all go straight to dudes head. Know why? Because Rakim refers to himself as GOD! WTF???

Here’s a dude who’s from a much earlier era than Jay Z, yet ‘Hova’ is doing laps and laps around Rakim, when he should have been holding down the “King of New York” title.

Eric B discovered Rakim back in the day, moving the (then unknown rapper) from Long Island, New York to ‘The Big Apple.’. It’s Eric B’s golden touch that transformed Rakim into the superstar we all know today. As a result, Rakim whose real name is William Griffin, was born a star. Both his style and image were sparked from the visionary mind of his partner, Eric B. So…for those of you who have any inclination that Rakim did it all by himself, YOU ARE ALL DEAD WRONG!!!

Most black kids who love the art of hip/hop look up to Rakim. I’m sorry to say, those kids are being totally misguided. Know why? Because the Rakim they idolize so much truly has a deep dark side…which I’m about to reveal to you. Read on…

The group ‘Eric B and Rakim’ severed their ties, in the early 90′s. I don’t know exactly why, but I did try getting at Eric to uncover the reasoning behind their break-up, and he was not available for comment.

Now I’m just speculating here, (but armed with both my credible sources and my great logic). I’m sure one of the reasons was because Rakim went MIA for countless shows and interviews. I wonder why? Were drugs to blame for his sudden absence? It’s no secret that dude has been smoking cocaine for some time now. What’s worse is he’s now calling himself a GOD! WTF??? I’d say that’s very ungodly! I mean, how hypocritical is that?

Rakim claims he’s all about being black, yet he’s quick to turn around and cash a check to join a campaign that advertises liquor. And guess who’s paying attention??? That’s right, OUR KIDS!!! I’d say that’s a solid reason for sparking the divorce between Eric B and Rakim.

Let’s now take a look at his solo career — without Eric B, was Rakim successful? NOT!!! To be sure, let me remind you that though he did move forward as a solo act (through his release of “The 18th Letter”), but he was sure to include a few songs of his own, paired-up with some of the greatest hits he made with Eric B.

Rakim released yet another album, and just about everyone (with half-of-a-brain) wasn’t surprised when it was found to be a complete and utter FAILURE…Know why? It only sold less than 30-thousand units. That’s the reason why Universal Records dropped his a$$! Dude can’t seem to sell a record without Eric B by his side. And Rakim is quick to diss the dude who made him – through verbal attacks on wax on the flop recordings? That’s quite nigger-ish…don’t you think?

Dr Dre came to save the day by signing Rakim to his label, AfterMath. Guess what happened? I’ll tell you. Around that same time, I was sitting in Zach Katts’ office (Rakim’s manager) who played me a few tracks by Dre, admitting to me that he was having issues getting Ra into the studio. Why couldn’t lazy ass Rakim hold-up his end of the bargain? I’ll tell you. It’s because he barricaded himself in his own apartment smoking California crack. I guess that’s why Dr Dre dropped his a$$ too.

This guy Rakim refers to Caucasians as ‘white devils’ – while (mind you), he has his very own ‘Arliss’ backing him up. Talk about a contradiction!!! He’s no different than Glen Beck. In other words, he’s not only a racist…he’s also a hypocrite!!!

A reporter once told me that he held a sort of admiration and respect for Rakim saying, “I walked into Rakim’s dressing room and he was smoking weed with teenagers. That’s when I lost all my respect for the guy.” Wait…that’s not all folks! I also have other sources who have openly admitted to being totally disgusted in Rakim’s behavior. Even Iron Mike Tyson said, “I totally looked up to the guy during my state of depression, I mean if Rakim called me out to get it together I would. But, when I met him and saw what he really was all about, I was completely turned off.”

I’ve got news for you…Rakim is not the saviour whom you all speak of. Know why? Because he’s a crack smoking addict, and an alcoholic lush. With that said, how can he be god-like…let alone a GOD????

In a desperate effort to keep his name alive, Rakim released yet another flop project “The Seventh Seal.” It sold about 1,000 copies…OUCH!!!

Even after dudes tarnished track record, the same label Universal Records (who once dropped him), is now taking Rakim back under their wing by releasing “The Seventh Seal” AGAIN (through Fontana records). His newest release features Rakim making his debut after a lengthy hiatus (probably on drugs). I guess even though Universal Records seems to have not learned their lesson the first time, they’re looking to land some sort of security by again including some of the greatest hits of ‘Eric B and Rakim’. WTF???

I hope that Rakim seeks some help, cuz he’s seriously in need of rehabilitation. Come on Ra, do yourself a favor and check-in with celebrity rehab therapist, Dr. Drew. Because at one time, you and Eric B recorded a fucking dope track called “I ain’t no joke” – But time has proved yourself to be JUST THAT…a fucking joke…Won’t you agree?

“I aint no joke, I used to let the mic smoke, now I slammed it to the ground and picked up the dope.”
Say it aint so Ra, say it aint so.
I’ve always loved Rakim, he was one of the lyrical heavyweights, I hope he cleans up and gets his head on straight.
I gotta admit, it would really turn me off if he put old Eric B. and Rakim joints on his new album…AGAIN.
He has some nice tracks on the 18th Letter AND The Master, but it always seemed like he wasn’t giving 100%, and when you listen to those cd’s you cant help but wish he had never split with Eric B…

I’d be thinking that Rakim was really great in his prime. However, its unfair to compare Jay-Z to Rakim. Rakim had generated alot of thought provoking and innovative material in his day. If he didnt do what he did (along with Big Daddy Kane, KRS-One and Kool G Rap)then there would be no Jay-Z or Nas.

Also, I’d be thinking that Dre dropped Rakim because Rakim didnt want to rap that same nonsense that 50, Eminem and the GAME rap about. Dre wouldnt have been satisfied with his sales numbers, either.

Who the f are you? Rakim is still cool in my book.

When Rakim refers to himself as God, I’m thinking that it’s probably linked to the 5 percent nation(Gods/Earths). I know many 5 perceters, and they have names like that!Eric B & Rakim were great together, or at least they appeared to be ,but you can’t give total credit to Eric B for Rakim’s talent. He was the emcee and Eric B the deejay! His lack of sales could simply be tied to the change in hip-hop. There are alot of rappers who had hot albums out in the past that aren’t selling as much or anything these days! New generation of music buyers! If he is on drugs that would mean that he needs help, and I hope he gets it.Addiction is a problem.

The best verses I ever heard Jay spit was the one on Big L’s Lifestylez of the Poor & Dangerous, and even that one sucked ass. It always boggled my mind when I heard people say hes so great, tasteless heathens.
And to add to my previous comment, Ra had several cool joints on 18th Letter but only like one or two the The Master. His shit with Eric B, even all the way through to Dont Sweat The Technique was DOPE, but his solo shit has not been up to par. I love the guy, I went to see him live, but I certainly cant condone or look lightly upon someone habitually smoking the rock… And to speak on something Jacky mentioned earlier when I saw him live I was outside when he showed up, standing just 6 or so feet from him on the sidewalk, very few people around, and dude was cold and stiff, lookin at me like I was the white devil LOLOL. He looked miserable and that was the feeling I got at the time. But I guess crack definitely aint gonna make you happy. On the other hand, I met Brand Nubian, and they couldn’t have been cooler, all smiles and very appreciative. Signed my cd, shook my hand, cool fuckin dudes mane. And I must say even though Fire In The Hole had like maybe 2 tracks that werent so hot, the rest was. Those dudes have steadily put out great music, one of my favorite hip hop bands ever. Much warmth from Brand Nu, much ice from Ra…oh well. I wish him the best of luck.

nothing wrong with joking about it! Most people have overcome personal issues. Thats what determines a persons strength over the next who chooses not to overcome. Congrats DJCS!

Indeed, its not how far down you are, its whether you can get back up. Overcoming hardships is what builds character…not everyone does it. Congrats DJCS, you conquered it and I wish you great success in the future.

dont believe everything you read on the internets – especially when written by someone with some sort of ax to grind. The Eric B stuff aside as it’s a subjective opinion who helped who (I like to think they helped each other), a couple of facts: Rakim’s first solo record – “The 18th Letter” went gold, was #1 on the Billboard R&BHipHop Charts and won BMI songwriting awards, not exactly a failure. His second solo album went peaked at #7 with a top ten hit in When I Be on the Mic. Rakim is Nation of Gods and Earths (5%er) – they all call each other God or Godbody. Dre didn’t “drop” Ra – he bought out his own contract to come back east. He doesn’t do cocaine – much less crack. He hardly drinks except for a glass of congac here and there. The Seventh Seal was never released before now. There are no Eric B tracks – new or old – on that album. Like I said, don’ believe everything you read on the internets.

Jacky Jasper is the one who’s smoking crack. Stop being depressed about your own failed rap career and do something about your life. You come across as the male Wendy Williams: ie: a bitch. Are you sad that you were in the rap game for years and never found success? Taking out your aggression on a great MC just makes you look more like the envious, hateful bitch you are.

I’ve known him since elementary days: always quiet, pensive, and humble. To many extents, he still is. If your story were true, why not wish him well rather than bash and hate on him. He hasn’t been outright mean to anyone, so why do you have all this malice in the tone of your writing. He and Eric B were destined to part ways, because record-spinning DJs are outdated in todays music world. It’s unfortunate, but true. Look at Spinderella. She was not included in the reality show where Salt and Pepper attempted to comeback. That’s because there is not need for her skills anymore. So let’s move on. Ra doesn’t speak badly of him: only positive.

As I said, i ive kbown him since books wwre made from wood. Why all the sarcasm and anger towards a dude who doesn’t harbor the same malice? Get Iron Mike, a convict, no less, to sign on to your credibility with a signed statement. Moreover, you do not say WHICH characteristic of Rakim’s Iron Mike disliked. It could be anything. Before chose the Five Percent religion (hence, why he refers to himself as a God), he was a talented musician who could play almost every instrument in the high school band. He is from a family of talented musicians! Therefore, he’s not just some overnight rapper. He used his gift in a medium most relevant to his community. He deserves the attention. Believe it or not, he was a star in our community from 6 yrs old. Any vices you, me, or he has, may change how people view us but it can’t erase the impact we’ve already made. Hell, I still love Whiney Houston’s Bodyguard video. Hail from Wyandanch and surrounding areas on Strong Island!

You say Eric had a golden touch that helped Rakim get his status. Did Eric B’s help put you at that level? And, I hear Eric plans to have a radio show so is this why your doing this, to try to help Eric regain what he lost?
