Back in the 90′s, many so-called producers were laughing all the way to the bank, after stealing exerts of classics, created by true to-the-bone artists.
My reasoning for using the word ‘stealing’, is because many of the producers in question never took the time to make an effort to tweek what they were thieving. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve heard the Frankie Beverly And Maze track, “Before I Let Go”. With so many rappers laying their vocals on the classic track, the group “Maze” didn’t need to release another album. Know why? Because hip/hop producers must of been paying out the ass to clear the sample.
Sean “Puffy” Combs is notorious for making a lengthy career, from his constant sampling of music. That does not constitute being a producer Diddy!!! Anyone with a pair of ears can hear that dude simply sampled any record he liked, added new drums, threw a rapper or singer on it, and released it. Guess what? Those so-called works of art sold millions.
Jermaine “The Man Kid” Dupris is yet another self-proclaimed producer. He too followed what I like to call – The Puffy Method. Neither Diddy nor Dupris created anything original. That’s not an artist!!!
On the contrary, sampling can be utilized in a positive manner when it comes the the art of music. I mean, just about all producers do sample, but do so in a discreet manner – while adding their own personal touches (so that the track being sampled, isn’t in yo face). But, to just sample an artist’s music (while these so-called producers charge their vocalists large sums of cash – for something they didn’t even create), and not add anything other than drums and an artist to the track, is a complete rip-off.
Don’t you agree?

its not a rip off its just taking firmiliar music that people can relate to too and making it current again. and if they paid the cost to sample the record more power to them

Ok, I have no idea who you are or what your credentials are but you are little out of date with your citations. Diddy and JD haven’t been sample heavy since way back in the 90′s. Judging from many of your posts you sound like a bitter old man who is out of touch and out of date. Stay current…most ppl don’t even sample anymore. And the ones who do don’t follow the procedures that u spoke of. Do u even kno anything about hip hop production? Didn’t think so

As a listener, I’m often totally sold when a producer samples. Often, they are referencing a brilliant song that I might never have heard otherwise. In a lot of cases, I don’t have any interest in the rap, just the hook. That was the case for ‘City Is Mine’ by Jay-Z, who sexed up great Miami Vice theme tune. In Twista’s version of ‘Lovely Day’ the rap was a lot more palatable. I was disgusted at Kanye West’s version of ‘Move On Up’. Is that because I dislike him anyway? Probably, but the overall product is just sickening.
I see what you’re saying about subtlety, and remember exactly how you and Phil Cold referenced ‘Strawberry Letter 23′ on the Narcissism album . Just offsetting the harmony like that took it in new directions, and also rekindled my love for the original.
I could go on forever with examples about this topic, but find it difficult to make a perfect argument. Bottom line: I love rap for it’s ability to resurrect great songs. Sometimes I get fooled, but usually it comes down to whether the artist can hold himself to a high standard and really pay tribute to what he heard in the sampled song. Like Steve Harris of Iron Maiden said about band members writing songs for their albums: I don’t care who writes the songs, but they better be bloody good!
