What Do You Know About The Astragalus Leaf?February 11th, 2012
Although we are fastly aproaching the upcoming spring months and moving away from the midst of the heavy cold and flu seasons, it is always important to educate ourselves on how to keep our immune system functioning properly. Over the next few weeks I will be covering different herbs and natural ways to keep our immune system boosted.
Astragalus has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. It was often combined with other herbs to strengthen the body against disease. Astragalus is called an adaptogen, meaning it is thought to help protect the body against various stresses, including physical, mental or emotional stress.
Astragalus may help protect the body from diseases such as cancer and diabetes. It contains antioxidants, which protects cells against damage caused by free radicals, by-products of cellular energy. Astragalus is used to protect and support the immune system, for preventing colds, to treat diabetes and to protect the liver.
Astragalus also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is sometimes used topically on the skin to help heal and disinfect wounds. In addition, studies have shown that astragalus has antiviral properties helping to stimulate and boost the immune system. People who take medications such as Acyclovir to help treat herpes outbreaks can also use astragalus in addition to increase the effectiveness of the medication to decrease the recurrence of outbreaks and treat exisiting ones. Recent research in China suggests that, because astragalus is an antioxidant, it may help people with severe forms of heart disease, relieving symptoms and improving heart function.
The intake of the astragalus herb comes in several differents forms including tinctures, capsules, tea and the actual root. I recommend always to consult with a practitioner of natural and holistic medicines before consuming any herbs on your own. This can be done in person or even online, where there are various websites that offer free online consultations.
Remember: when you FEEL better you DO better. So continue taking care if your bodies as much as you can but most importantly, continue to educate yourselves about bodily functions and natural ways of healing. Until next time!!
